A beautiful sunny Saturday in the studio working on a new commission for a Washington D.C. residence and chilling listing to my favorite new meditative album "Asronomica" by my good friend @of1000faces. Amazing to think the original drummer for Smashing Pumkins & the current drummer for Morrissey is so incredibly diverse.

This piece was created using 15c Einstein commemorate stamps from 1979. The beautiful cloud-like pattern created by the layered hair and subtle monochromatic palette make this piece extra meditative and hypnotic. A behind the scenes look: "Old Glory" under construction in the studio. Each star is hand-made and hand-cut, and is created using U.S. flag themed stamps of various years. For this particular flag piece I chose the 1973 (#1509 & 1519) issues featuring two crossed flags (a 50-star and a 13-star). This phase is the most precise and meticulous part of the flag process, as the geometry and arrangement of the star field must be absolutely precise. "Old Glory" used U.S. postage stamps and resin on canvas 36" x 60" 2020

This image is straight of of camera, the undulating light source was added in post. (Canon 5D mark iii, Sigma DG 100mm-400mm) See more of my "Photoloops" here. From Turning Art, Boston, Interview, August 2020:
"My father was my first inspiration. He was a sculptor and a painter. From the age of about four, I worked on sketches with him, particularly of faces and drawings of my own left hand. I spent a great deal of time in his studio...Presently, I am interested in Carl Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious and the interconnectedness of the universe, as well as the correlating schools of thought and mysticism related to these concepts. This includes the idea of the universe as a hologram. All of my postage stamp pattern fields are my interpretation and reinvention of mandalas, or meditative microcosms. I am very drawn to simple, but powerful geometric relationships and repeating patterns." "Reflections" used U.S. postage stamps and resin on canvas 48" x 48"
Based on folk art textile quilts and wall hangings, this vibrant piece has a new home at Boston Children's Hospital in their new Hale Family Building. Courtesy of @turningart Images: artwork, detail & in-situ. |
